Skirt for Baby Girl

A few weeks ago, I shared with you how I made Miss P a bigger baby hat to replace the one I had knitted for her as an infant.  Now she's one year old!  I can't believe how fast the year has gone!  For the second part of Miss P's 1st birthday present, I wanted to make her a baby skirt as well, in her favorite colors.  (This one also one of my Project 14 goals - yes!  another one checked off the list :)
The idea for this baby skirt came Amber's Learn to Sew Series @ Crazy little projects.  Soon after I got my sewing machine, she started this series and I stumbled upon it through a blog hop.  If you're new to sewing, I highly encourage you to check it out.
Anyways, one of the projects was for a baby skirt and Miss P immediately jumped to my mind.  I was ready to take on a new project.  This is a pretty simple project and sews up easily in a morning (or evening).

Materials
1/3 yard of each color (you will have left overs)
Thread to match
3/4 inch no roll elastic approx 16 inches.
Sewing machine - I have a Brother CS6000i - I bought mine at Target with some wedding money - works great so far!

Directions
First, measure how long you want your skirt to be and add 3 inches (1 for the hem and 2 for the elastic casing).  All layers will be 45 inches wide (or as wide as your fabric is)
I wanted my skirt to be 7 inches long.
I cut my bottom layer to be 10 inches long, the middle layer was cut 8 inches long, and the bottom layer was 6 inches long.
Next step is to make your hem.  To do this, press a fold a quarter to half inch from the bottom (it should be closer to 1/4 inch, but I'm not that good yet, so my hems are wider and I do it at a half inch)
Fold and press again.
Stitch along the edge.  I lined the edge of my hem up on the grid on the bottom of my sewing machine to help me sew a straight line.
When you are done, line up all three layers, longest layer on the bottom, shortest layer on top.  Flip your layers over, so the wrong sides are facing up.  Create a casing for your elastic.  Fold down 1 inch and press. Fold over and press again.  Stitch up to create a casing.
Thread a safety pin into your elastic (make the elastic one inch shorter than the waist of the little girl) and thread through your casing.
Overlap the two ends of your elastic and sew back and forth (sorry, forgot the picture!) so that it will stay in place.  Your waistband should be very ruffled at this point
Turn your skirt inside out and sew up the open side.
Ta-da!  You're done!  You have made and adorable three baby skirt :)
